‘My husband ran off’: Pool selfie queen Martha Stewart showcases sass in ‘Martha Knows Best’

Last month, Martha Stewart made waves with a celebrated pool selfie. Last week, her new gardening series, “Martha Knows Best,” took root.

The half-hour HGTV show sprouted Friday with two episodes showing the lifestyle guru at her farm in Bedford, New York, and once again schooling viewers on various home projects. Stewart, who turns 79 Monday, also surprised fans seeking advice by hopping on the phone and fielding video calls with celebrity pals like model Hailey Bieber, Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o, comedian Jay Leno; and actor Richard Gere.

“Queer Eye” chef Antoni Porowski and Stewart’s “Potluck Dinner Party” co-host, Snoop Dogg, popped in for Friday’s opener.

While she offers valuable tips for the quarantine gardeners who’ve cropped up, “Martha Knows Best” also allows Stewart’s brand of wit to shine – “a good thing!”.

Here are the moments from the debut episodes worthy of a raised “Martha-Rita.”.

Seeing (‘Queer’) eye to eye

Porowski and Stewart hadn’t seen each other since a Christmas party thrown by Stewart, after which Porowski found himself on her naughty list for not tagging her in his social media posts from the event. He posted a picture of her stable and another with her pups. Stewart called him out in the comments section of one of his posts, revealing the whole thing left her feeling “bummed.” In Friday’s premiere, Porowski said he “would like to take this opportunity and apologize and explain myself.”.

“My dogs! Not his dogs!” Martha says, referencing a Porowski’s picture. “I was so offended, and I was even more offended because you didn’t send me a thank you note. That’s the worst thing that you did.”.

Porowski’s promise to “do better” makes Stewart laugh.

Following their planting lesson, Porowski is proud of his planting work. “Not bad for somebody who doesn’t have any manners,” he says. “You like to pat yourself on your back, don’t you?” Stewart teases.

Stewart’s fowl mouth

Episode 1, all about vegetable gardens, also gives a peak at Stewart’s life in the farm.

“I always talk to my chickens,” she says. They currently don’t have names, but they used to have very interesting monikers.

“I used to have names like ‘Chicken Wings,’ ‘Chicken Stew,’ but I just say, ‘Hi,'” she says.

Stewart also seems to have fun conversing with a few of her 17 peacocks on her farm. As on-screen caption says, “Martha is fluent in at least 4 different animal languages.” She says the peacocks “love talking to me.”.

Exposing the thorn in her side – her ex

Stewart and her former husband, Andrew Stewart, divorced in 1990 after nearly 30 years of marriage. Her ex comes to mind after she gives advice about their raised bed garden in Episode 1.

“The couple that gardens together, stays together. Except for me, my husband ran off. He didn’t like gardening very much,” she says, laughing.

“I’d find him lying on his back in the garden with his Walkman, and he would be lying listening to a symphony, while he was supposed to be weeding the garden. That was the end of him (laughs).”.

Talking P-O-T with Snoop D.O. Double G

Stewart says her rapping “Potluck Dinner Party” co-host “came to mind first” for the second episode dedicated to planting in containers.

“I’m sure you have pot to put in your pots, right?” She asks him.

Snoop says he’s actually out of marijuana, and needs Stewart’s assistance so he can grow his own supply.

“My guy has been in quarantine. He hasn’t been able to grow,” Snoop jokes. “So he said it’d be best for me to learn how to grow my own.” But Snoop ends up planting tomatoes for his mom.

Show me the thriving money plants!

Stewart also uses “Martha Knows Best” to plant a seed of an idea with her painters: pay attention to her plants.

As she’s watering money plants resting in a wall planter that she designed (naturally) at the start of Episode 2, a defeated Stewart announces: “I’ll come home, and these will all be dead. The painters will knock them off.”.
