Mom who saved son in Orlando shooting laid to rest

Sons, from left, Michael Marquez, Isaiah Henderson and Robert Presley grieve during the funeral of Pulse shooting victim Brenda Lee Marquez McCool at First United Methodist Church in downtown Orlando, Fla., Monday, June 20, 2016.

As shots began to ring out in Orlando’s Pulse nightclub a week ago, Brenda Lee Marquez-McCool could have turned and run, but instead she stood in front of her son, shielding him from bullets, according to family members.

“Brenda saw him point the gun. She said, ‘Get down,’ to Isaiah and she got in front of him,” her sister-in-law Ada Pressley told the New York Daily News.

Marquez-McCool was 49-years-old when she died while having what was supposed to be a fun night out with her 21-year-old son, Isaiah Henderson. The mother of 11, and two-time cancer survivor, was laid to rest on Monday, in a teary farewell at First United Methodist Church of Orlando.

Survivors of Orlando shooting face painful recovery and financial pitfalls.

Over the past week, many of the victims are being buried near the city that’s become the site of the nation’s worst mass shooting in history.

“Tensions are high right now,” said Douglas Dobbs, owner of the Dobbs Funeral Home in Orlando, who is helping arrange two out-of-town services and one at his funeral home Tuesday.

On Monday, Henderson sobbed as he remembered his mother, and several siblings walked up to support him as he talked about a woman that everyone wanted to be around.

“Everybody who knew my mom knew she was the mom everybody wanted,” Henderson said, NBC reported. “She always took everybody in with open arms. She loved everybody equally, no matter what.”.
