Man in wheelchair rescued from D.C. subway tracks

WUSA-TV, Washington, D.C.

WASHINGTON — Two men rescued a man from the subway tracks in Washington after his motorized wheelchair went off a platform, a Metro spokesman said.

According to Metro spokesman Dan Stessel, a 54-year-old man drove his motorized wheelchair off the platform at the U Street station and onto the tracks just before 1:30 p.M. Tuesday. After he drove onto the tracks, the wheelchair landed on top of him.

Two men jumped off the platform and rescued the man from the tracks, Stessel said.

The man was transported to a hospital with cuts, but otherwise he’s expected to be OK.

Metro says they do not have the names of the two individuals who helped the man but are working with police to identify them.

Stessel says he does not know why the man drove off the platform.
