‘Jumanji 2’s Nick Jonas reveals why he panicked over Priyanka’s surprise puppy gift

Priyanka Chopra totally surprised her sleeping husband Nick Jonas for a classic Instagram moment last month — revealing her anniversary present, an adorable German Shepherd puppy.

Jonas, 28, had a panicked look on his face as the puppy jumped into the bed with him. But that wasn’t the real reason reason for the shocked look.

“There’s a backstory as to why I woke up in a panic,” Jonas tells USA TODAY.

The “Jumanji: The Next Level” star knew his wife was coming back from a trip that morning and he was looking forward to welcoming her with an early morning cup of coffee upon her arrival. So romantic.

But Jonas and his visiting mother-in-law “stayed up talking about my wife for quite some time. And it’s both of our favorite subject. It was kind of late when I went to bed.”.

As a result, Jonas slept through his planned coffee greeting for his wife.

His subsequent shock, captured on Instagram, “wasn’t because there was a dog that I didn’t know on top of me. It was because I realized I didn’t greet her at the door,” says Jonas.

Another reason for some of the pained looks Jonas gives in the video: The puppy was hurting Jonas with his excited pawing on his bare back.

“Those puppy claws are sharp. So there was a few scratches on my back from that,” Jonas says.

Priyanka cut her Instagram video off before Jonas woke up fully. Moments later he instantly named his new dog.

“The first thing that came to mind was Gino. Gino the German sounded like a cute name to me. And it stuck,” says Jonas. “So now he’s my guy.”.

Jonas says his favorite thing about Gino is the “immediate” connection between the two that’s visible even in the first, somewhat painful video. “It’s this unspoken thing where there’s a weird understanding between you and the animal and it’s love from first sight,” he says.

Gino has his own Instagram account and he’s become a part of the family, with Chopra owning her own Shepherd as well named Diana. However, when he’s on the road, Gino is working with a professional trainer for future, calmer encounters.

“He’s very much a puppy. He needed someone to show him how not to tear pillows apart. And not to use the bathroom wherever he wants,” says Jonas.
