Nothing says “freedom” quite like beers, barbecues and blistering sunburns.
But on this Fourth of July, John Oliver would like to remind you what you’ve been missing in the 240 years since the USA declared its independence from Great Britain. Although his HBO series Last Week Tonight is off until July 24, the late-night comedian recorded an online exclusive for Independence Day, “or as they call it where I’m from, July the 4th and that’s it.” In just under three minutes, the caustic Brit hilariously nails the downsides of being an American: no British accents, bowler hats, meat pies, and worst of all, pessimism.
“British people never make the mistake of developing self-esteem,” Oliver jests, before concluding that we might not have it so bad after all. You can watch the full clip below:.
