John Oliver blasts Trump for pardoning ‘decaying russet potato’ Joe Arpaio

President Trump pardoned former Sheriff Joe Arpaio while Last Week Tonight was on break. During the HBO show’s return Sunday, John Oliver addressed the commander in chief’s decision, which has been criticized by celebrities like George Takei and Debra Messing.

The former Maricopa County sheriff was convicted of criminal contempt of court in July, after a federal court order was issued prohibiting Arpaio from detaining people solely for suspected immigration violations.

Oliver called the decision to pardon “a man who answers the question ‘What if a decaying russet potato somehow hated Mexicans?'” “A doozy” in the very NSFW clip.

The late night host disagreed with Trump’s notion that Arpaio might’ve just been “convicted for doing his job.”.

“He absolutely was not just doing his job,” stated Oliver. “He was also doing something illegal. You wouldn’t say that (serial killer) John Wayne Gacy was just doing his job, even though he was, by all accounts, a pretty good birthday clown.”.
