Iman Shumpert agrees to a four-year contract with Cavaliers

Iman Shumpert will have a new deal with the Cavaliers.

The Cleveland Cavaliers’ payroll just keeps rising into what will be a pretty astronomical luxury tax bill when the NBA comes to collect.

That’s the price of trying to win a championship, and the Cavaliers dug deeper into the pocket on Wednesday, reaching a four-year, $40 million deal with guard Iman Shumpert, a person with direct knowledge of the deal told USA TODAY Sports.

The person requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly on the agreement until Shumpert officially signs the contract after July 8 when the free agency moratorium period ends.

Shumpert came to the Cavaliers in a January trade with the New York Knicks and he helped turn Cleveland’s season around with his defense and offense.

Shumpert averaged 7.2 points and 3.8 rebounds for the Cavs, but with advanced statistics in play, the Cavs scored 108.9 points and allowed 99.2 points per 100 possessions with Shumpert on the court. They were a tad better offensively but also much worse defensively with Shumpert on the bench.

Throughout the regular season and playoffs, Cavs star LeBron James praised Shumpert’s two-way strengths.

Before the Shumpert deal, Cleveland reached a five-year, $108.9 million deal with Kevin Love and the Cavs are trying to finalize a deal with forward Tristan Thompson.
