Ferguson police officer shot in arm

KSDK-TV, St. Louis.

ST. LOUIS – A Ferguson, Mo., Police officer was shot in the arm Saturday night after encountering two suspects at a community center who fired at him, authorities say. In an apparently unrelated event early Sunday, a St. Louis police officer’s car was shot up. He was unharmed.

Police say the shooting in Ferguson occurred while the officer was on routine patrol at the Ferguson Community Center.

Tim Zoll of the Ferguson Police Department said the officer was shot in the arm. The officer’s identity and condition is unknown at this time.

The suspects are still at large. No further information was immediately available.

Ferguson was the site of sometimes violent protests and looting in the days after Darren Wilson, a white Ferguson police officer, shot Michael Brown, a black teenager who was unarmed, on Aug. 9. Witnesses said that Brown had his hands raised above his head before he was shot dead.

On Thursday, Ferguson Police Chief Tom Jackson issued an apology to Brown’s family.

“I’m truly sorry for the loss of your son. I’m also sorry that it took so long to remove Michael from the street,” Jackson said. “You have every right to be angry and upset.”.

But hours later, tensions flared in the street outside of City Hall. Demonstrators were in the area most of the night and didn’t start to clear out until around 3 a.M. A Ferguson police lieutenant reported seven arrests were made.

Early Sunday, St. Louis police shut down westbound I-70 after an off-duty police officer’s car was shot at during a drive-by.

Schron Jackson with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department told NewsChannel 5 that the incident occurred around 12:20 a.M. The 48-year-old male officer suffered a minor injury to his arm from broken glass and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Police say three black male suspects fired shots into the off-duty officer’s personal vehicle at I-70 and I-170. The suspects fled in a black sedan.

The officer, who has nearly 20 years of experience, did not return fire.

The investigation is ongoing.
